CYA Podcast
The CYA: Children & YA Book Review Podcast discussed I Am J by Cris Beam. Our topic was the Wall Street Journal article on the dangers of dark teen lit. Guess what side we’re on. Take a listen as we go through the articles and declare war on them and the author: http://yalitlovers.oklibshare.org/2011/06/i-am-j-or-aint-nuthin-but-a-j-thing/.

Best Books of 2011 (so far)
I’m re-sending this in case you missed it in the last email. Attached is a list of titles YALSA-BK contributors listed as a few of the best of 2011 read this year. You will find a few titles that were released late last year on the list, but definitely worthy.  You can use the list for a display. You can post the list in the teen area indicating which books your library owns and which teens can interlibrary loan.

YALSA Teens Top Ten
There are 25 nominees for this year’s Teens’ Top Ten list. YALSA, through a generous donation from Dollar General, is giving away 10 sets of the nominees to libraries in need. Individual library branches within a larger system are welcome to apply. Applications are due Aug. 1, 2011. Recipients will be announced the week of Sept. 12th, 2011.  To learn more about the Teens’ Top Ten, visit www.ala.org/teenstopten. Visit YALSA’s homepage at www.ala.org/yalsa to learn more and to download the application. In order to be eligible for the books, applicants must be YALSA members and their library must be within 20 miles of a Dollar General Store.  To find out if your library meets that criteria, visit http://tinyurl.com/3mkq5xu.

Don’t forget to encourage your teens to read the nominees throughout the summer so they can go online and vote for their favorites beginning Aug. 15th.  Thanks for all that you do to get more teens reading!

YALSA Grant
Learning Labs in Libraries & Museums
from the Institute of Museum & Library Services and the MacArthur Foundation

These grants (up to $100,000) will support the planning and designing of up to 30 Learning Labs in libraries and museums throughout the country. The Labs are intended to engage middle- and high-school youth in mentor-led, interest-based, youth-centered, collaborative learning using digital and traditional media. Grantees will be required to participate, in-person and online, in a community of practice that will provide technical assistance, networking, and cross-project learning. Projects are expected to provide prototypes for the field and be based on current research about digital media and youth learning. There will be two project deadlines for this grant program: the first is Aug. 15, 2011, and the second deadline is planned for spring 2012.  For additional information, visit http://www.imls.gov/about/macarthur.shtm.

Summer Reading in Full Swing

Summer Reading
By now, the majority of libraries are well into their summer reading program. I hope things are going well. Reports are starting to come with libraries getting a few more kids than expected. Good news! Let me know if you need more materials as soon as you can. In my office I have an abundance of bookmarks and that’s about it. Reading logs, certificates and stickers will have to be ordered from Upstart/Highsmith. Let me know before you run out if you need more and I’ll get the order in right away. Upstart has plenty of these items in stock, so shipping shouldn’t take long.

2011-12 WrestleMania Reading Challenge
YALSA
and WWE are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2011-2012 WrestleMania Reading Challenge!  Sign up by July 31, and teens at your library could win a trip to WrestleMania XXVIII in Miami next April – and you could win $2,000 for your library!

Libraries and educators who register will receive promotional packs with large posters, mini posters, and other materials to help you promote the challenge in late August.  Libraries with multiple branches can register once and request the number of promotional packs they need to distribute to all branches.

Participation in the challenge is open to those in grades 5-12 in all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia, as well as all legal residents of Canada excluding Quebec.  Teens and tweens who wish to compete for tickets and a trip to WrestleMania 28 in Miami, Florida, will complete and submit a special project during Teen Read Week, Oct. 16-22, 2011.

Twenty-one finalists will be chosen in January 2012 and will win transportation, hotel, tickets and spending money to attend WrestleMania 28 in Miami.  Their sponsoring library will win $2,000.  Finalists will compete in the WrestleMania Reading Challenge Championships, where they can win ringside tickets to WrestleMania 28 and other prizes.  Registration is open now through July 31 at www.ala.org/wrestlemania.

Oklahoma Teen Read Month 2011
Speaking of YALSA’s Teen Read Week, Oklahoma’s Teen Read Month is already in the planning. I have contacted a well-known local artist to do the artwork that corresponds with the theme “Picture It” which is a focus on graphic novels. We are also writing the lesson plans that will be on the ODL and Newspapers in Education website and in the NIE paper that is delivered to schools across the state. We would love to include your contribution of an activity, reading list, or program, just send your ideas. We also have bigger and better prizes this year. Once we have all of our sponsors nailed down I will let you know. The prizes are really, really good this year. You are going to like them.

Grant Opportunity from Build-A-Bear
Build-A-Bear Workshop
provides direct support for children in literacy and education programs, such as summer reading programs, early childhood education programs and literacy programs for children with special needs.  The grants are made possible through the sale of Turner the Owl, a special furry friend available in all Build-A-Bear Workshop stores.  With the sale of each Turner the Owl, $.50 cents is donated to First Book and $.50 cents is donated through the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation to other literacy programs throughout the United States and Canada.  Grant requests reviewed on a rolling basis through October 2011.  For more information go to:  http://www.buildabear.com/shopping/contents/content.jsp?catId=400002&id=700010.

Think B4 You Speak with Grant Hill
If you watched any of the NBA games (so proud of our OKC Thunder on how far they made it this year) you would have seen the new PSA to stop gay slurs with Grant Hill. This is Hill’s contribution to the cause that it’s not okay to say something that puts down another group, no matter who they are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nasp3euSqjM

Virtual Author Visits
Random House
has a list of authors available for in-person and virtual visits. Only the authors listed in bold are available for virtual visits. http://www.randomhouse.com/teachers/authors/list.html. If you scroll to the bottom there are authors that will visit teachers and adults only which would be great for a in-service opening speaker or conference session or panel speaker. Go here for the request form and how to set up a virtual visit, http://www.randomhouse.com/teachers/authors/appear.html.

YSC Reads
I’ve been busy, busy reading the past few weeks. Mainly I’ve been getting ready for my first face-to-face committee meeting in at ALA in New Orleans. I have a couple of books left to read in order to be ready to discuss them.

I’ve also been reading for the local Young Adult Literature Lovers group I attend. We just finished Terry Pratchett’s I Shall Wear Midnight the final book in the Tiffany Aching series. We all thought he wrapped up the series very nicely.

Finally, I’m reading for the CYA Podcast. We recorded Red Glove by Holly Black, second book in The Curseworkers series, and Cloaked by Alex Flinn. Next is I Am J by Cris Beam, Delirium by Lauren Oliver and six children’s books selected by Cathie Sue & Jenny. You can listen via you computer, download onto your computer and listen or move to any handheld MP3 device, or download through iTunes.

My oldest daughter and I participated in the 48 hour book challenge this year presented by Mother Reader. The rules are to read as many books as you can in 48 hours allowing sleep and life. My own rules were no TV or video games. I did allow for going outside to play and listening to music while reading. I really enjoyed the challenge. I only read 4 books, though. Divergent was 460 pages, which reading it within a 24 hour period was fast for me. On the last day, too much life got in the way of the my reading and I could only squeeze in 4 hours instead of the 8 I had planned. I’m looking forward to doing this again next year and with shorter books.

Does your reading need its own kick start? There are always book challenges just for librarians. Start your own Book-a-Day Challenge which is reading a book a day. I saw a tweet by a school librarian who is doing this over the summer now that all the books have been returned to the library including the ones most in demand.

How many books can you read over summer?

-A Few Books I’ve Read

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – a well-written dystopian world

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys – WW2 from the untold Lithuania story

Department 19 by Will Hill – hunting killer, ripping, tearing, psychotic vampires – whee!

Red Glove by Holly Black – magic and mobsters a lethal combination

Mine! By Shutta Crum – when everyone starts claiming and reclaiming what’s theirs

We Love Our School by Judy Sierra – a Rebus story about friends and what they do at school

2011 Teen PSA Contest

Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the national Collaborative Summer Reading Program want to encourage you to develop your video skills, have fun and use your library all summer long. We created this contest for teens to create videos for teens.

Create a video promoting Summer Reading at the Library and you could win $250!

Just a short Public Service Announcement, using the theme “You Are Here” could make you the Oklahoma “You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge Winner.

One winner can be selected from each state and CSLP member affiliate. Teens across America could see your video.

Splash! 2010 Water Share Fair

Attendance is busting out libraries all over the state! Shelves have been emptied and kids are reading, reading, reading. Libraries across the state were decorated to the hilt with water art and crafts.

This is all great and wonderful. But, where does that leave Oklahoma’s awesomely dedicated and intrepid librarians? Exhausted. Tired. And, getting just a little bit cranky. It’s almost over and soon you can come and talk it all out at Share Fair this fall.

Share Fair will be September 17, 2010 at the Midwest City Library in Midwest City, OK.

Bring pictures of your library!

Bring your examples of the crafts and decorations that you made!

Show off what your library did for the youth in your community!

Bringing and showing what you did lets other librarians learn new craft activities, share ideas and builds a community of support. Join me, won’t you?
